Zamfara State: Proposed International Cargo Airport Suffers Setback

Zamfara State Cargo Airport Project which started about two years ago has suffered total neglect by the state government.

This followed a total abandoned of the project by the contractor handling the works ULO Consultants Ltd, for almost a year.

Investigation conducted by Radio Nigeria Correspondent in Gusau revealed that, the project has not reach forty percent and the contractor handling the project has since vacated from the site.

Earlier in an interview , the state Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development Matters, Ahmad Muktar said that the slow nature of the project was due to rainy season and lack of funds considering the economic hardship bedeviling the state and the country in general.

Similarly, the governor on May 2021 opined that, the international cargo airport will commence full flight of intending pilgrims from the state by the end of 2021 which failed following the abandonment of the project.

When Radio Nigeria visited the site for the second time, it noted that the only main dualized road liking to the main premises of the airport was about 80 percent completed.

When the Governor paid an official visit to the site of the project on the outskirts of Gusau on the 20th of may, 2021, he said that a befitting Hajj camp would be established near the airport to ease all forms of logistical problems for intending pilgrims .

However, our investigation revealed that, both the terminal and runway had not reached 30 percent completion, following the vacation from the site by the contractor since last year.

The Zamfara international cargo airport project is part of the Public – Private Partnership, PPP of the Zamfara State government to gulp N357 billion that would be provided by Afrexim Bank.
