Reps To Investigate Alleged Irregularities At NSCDC

House of Representatives is to probe
recruitment and staff promotion exercises carried out by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in the last ten years.

The decision followed a motion by a member from Rivers State Mr Awaji Abiante, adopted by the house during its plenary.

Mover of the motion explained that recent events reveal that the NSCDC has not been observing the laid down principles of federal character in its recruitment processes , an act he described as a gross misconduct to civil service rules.

The lawmaker maintained that the allegation is marring the Corps with irregularities, racketeering, favouritism and nepotism as well as securing convictions for erring officials.

Mr Abiante also recalled a judgment by the Sokoto State High Court which sentenced two officials of the NSCDC to fourteen years imprisonment for defrauding four persons of N1.9 million, in the name of securing jobs for them.

He expressed concern that the precedence has become a frequent occurrence in the NSCDC, saying currently indigenes of other states are being employed, promoted and allocated in the place of the quota for Rivers state indigenes.

While dopting the motion, the House mandated its committees on Interior, Federal Character and Public Service Matters to investigate the matter and report back within six weeks.
