Youths Protest Plan By Zamfara State To Auction Govt’s Vehicles

Thousands of youths have stormed and barricaded the entrance of High Court 11 in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital over the planned auction of government vehicles.

The peaceful protest started as early as 9:00 am with the youths men and women carrying placards with different inscriptions showing displeasure over the auction of government vehicles.

Speaking to newsmen at the court premises, the spokespersons for the Youths, Comrade Aminu Atiku and comrade Usman Salihu said they were not satisfied with the court directives on auctioning the vehicles describing the moves as irreparable losses to the government.

They called on state government and the High Court to resolve the issues amicably for the interest of peace and the development of the state.

According to them, they will continue to protest any attempt to auction government properties across the state, adding that in the end, they will be the ones at loss being leaders of tomorrow.

In an interview the Counsel to the defendent Barrister M S Sulainman explained why the auction was stopped by the High Court.

He explained that the state government had already paid some part of the money but due to the economic situation of the state, the payment had stopped.

Similarly, the Counsel to the plaintiff’s Barrister John Shaka said the court order served to them to stop the auctioning lacked merit.

It would be recalled that several state government vehicles were parked at the premise of Zamfara State high court, Gusau lined up for auction following a court order to settle a debt owed to a contractor by the state government.

The accrued debts which led to the planned auction was incurred by the previous administration some years back.
