Humanitarian Ministry Distributes Food, Others To Vulnerable Persons In Katsina

The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development has provided assistance which includes food and non-food items as well as medical outreach to one thousand households in Katsina State.

At a program to distribute the items held at Mazoji village in Daura, the minister, Hajiya Saadiyya Umar-Faruk said the program was part of the interventions of the ministry to less privileged households in the country.

The items distributed to the beneficiaries include bags of rice, meat, millet and wheat, cartons of noodles, gallons of vegetable oil, cooking stoves, mattresses, and detergents.

The ministry also disbursed the sum of N20,000 each to 6,000 individuals which the minister said will go a long way in helping the beneficiaries with household and other sundry expenditure.

“we are here in Daura at Mazoji ward to distribute food and non-food items to 500 households, we are also carrying out medical outreach to 500 individuals.

“This is part of our interventions to less privileged persons which also includes cash grant of N20,000 to vulnerable groups in this area.

“In the whole state, we will give cash grant of N20,000 to 6,000 individuals as assistance to help them with household and other expenditure”.

Meanwhile the ministry has also provided relief intervention to victims of flooding in the state which includes food and non-food items as well as building materials to help them rebuild their houses that were washed away by the floods.

Hajiya Sadiya Faruk said the flood relief will be delivered to all states of the country affected by flooding, as thirteen Local government areas benefitted in Katsina State.

“We have brought relief intervention to victims of flooding in the state which includes food and non-food items as well as building materials to help them rebuild their houses that were washed away by the floods.

“Meanwhile following the floods there was immediate response by NEMA, then in collaboration with the state government, NEMA will carry out a needs assessment tour of the areas affected by the floods after which the Humanitarian Affairs Ministry will bring relief assistance the victims.

“The flood relief will be delivered in all state of the country affected by flooding, here in Katsina State we are intervening in 13 Local Government Areas”, the Minister said.

In her remarks, the Federal Commissioner, National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, Hajiya Imaan Suleiman explained that the commission which is an agency under the humanitarian affairs ministry, provided the relief items to alleviate the sufferings of vulnerable groups in the state.

At an occasion to hand over the bags of rice, maize, wheat, vegetable oil and matresses to the beneficiaries at Abbatoir primary school in Katsina, Hajiya Imaan Suleiman said the beneficiaries include IDPs that were displaced by armed bandits.

She said an assessment by the commission revealed that a high rate of displacement particularly in Batsari, Jibia, Safana, Faskari and other frontline local government areas where residents have lost valuable property due to armed banditry.

Mrs. Suleiman said “the situation has led to a high number of widows, orphans, and vulnerable groups that require assistance to cope with the aftermath of banditry and other forms of insecurity.

“The items will go a long way in providing succour to the beneficiaries, particularly IDPs displaced by the armed bandits in the central and southern parts of the state.

“The commission brought the relief items in view of the high number of orphans and widows in the state, a situation that was created by the activities of armed bandits in some parts of the state”, the Federal Commissioner said.
