CISLAC Tasks Security Agencies On Arms Proliferation

A security expert Mr. Salaudeen Hashim has tasked the Nigeria Customs and Immigration Service to intensify security at the nations borders as the country is battling with issues of insecurity mainly caused by proliferation of arms and allegations of foreign invaders.

He made the call while presenting a paper titled Consequence of Defence Accountability Gap on Human Security organized by Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Center, CISLAC in Kaduna.

Mr. Saludeen Hashim said escalation of insecurity cannot entirely be blamed on the military but a shared responsibility with other similar agencies especially as the country has witnessed proliferation of small arms and assault weapons in large quantities into the country.

He said the threat to peace and security are major issues that affect Nigeria’s development which is also capable of undermining the much needed unity of the people.

The expert lamented diversion and inappropriate use of funds budgeted for security purposes stating that such contribute in no small amount to fueling insecurity.

The lead paper presenter at the event, Mr.Tosin Suberu advocated the active participation of citizens in security budget and monitoring for transparency and accountability.

According to Mr. Subaru, the most effective way to preventing insecurity is to put in place measures that will stop people from taking laws into their hands such as equal treatment, listening and respect to all category of people.
