FG Fines Broadcast Platforms Over Bandits Documentary

The federal government has sanctioned Multi-Choice Nigeria Limited (Owners of DSTV), TelCom Satellite Limited (TSTV); NTA-Startimes Limited a fine of ₦5,000,000 each for the broadcast of the documentary by BBC Africa Eye, “Bandits Warlords of Zamfara”.

In a statement by the Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Mallam Balarebe Ilelah, the broadcast of the said documentary glorifies the activities of bandits and undermines Nigeria’s National Security.

Also, Trust-TV Network Limited was fined ₦5,000,000 for its documentary, “Nigeria’s Banditry-The Inside Story”.  

The NBC in the statement further clarified that the broadcast of these documentaries contravened the provisions of the National Broadcasting Code, 6th Edition.

The imposed penalties on these broadcast media platforms and stations are to be remitted not later than August 30, 2022, the statement says.
