UNICEF Enrolls Over 964,000 Out Of School Children In Sokoto, Zamfara

The United Nations Children Education Fund, UNICEF, has enrolled 964,325 out-of-school children from 2012 to date, in Sokoto and Zamfara states.

UNICEF’s Chief Field Officer Sokoto State, Dr Maryam Darwesh-Sa’id, disclosed this at a three-day Media Dialogue on Girls’ Education Project-GEP3 organised for some selected journalists from Sokoto and Zamfara States.

According to her, the figure represent 44 per cent in Sokoto and 62 per cent in Zamfara, based on progressive annual school census data.

She explained that between 2012 to date 11,593 teachers and head teachers were enhanced and out of them, 486 are females.

Dr Maryam Darwesh also assured that, UNICEF would continue to provide technical support to the states to ensure that, all school girls and boys were in school for a better education.

Earlier, the Executive Chairman, Universal Basic Education Board Sokoto sttate, Alhaji Altine Shehu Kajiji said, the state government had established 76 post literacy centres, two in each Local Areas of the state to promote formal learning.

He noted that this was part of the state government’s commitment to ensuring equal opportunities for girls and boys to have access to education.
