Terrorism: FG To Ban Motorcycle, Payment Of Ransom

Federal Government may consider recommendations to ban the use of motorcycles, mining activities, and the payment of ransome to terrorists.

The Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, gave this indication in Abuja, while briefing State House correspondents on the outcome of today’s security meeting, summoned by President Buhari.

He explained that the proposals, which were presented and extensively deliberated at the meeting, would be studied further and enforced appropriately.

Answering questions as to the implications of the proposed restrictions, the Minister argued that the government also had to be dynamic if security was to be restored.

Abubakar Malami said the government was not unaware of the hardship that would befall innocent motorcyclists, and the socio-economic implications of the proposed ban, but stressed that sacrifices had to be made to thwart the activities of terrorists.

While seeking the understanding of Nigerians regarding the proposed ban, the Minister of Interior, Alhaji Rauf Aregbesola, emphasised the need for encompassing actions to be taken to protect lives and property of Nigerians.

He said measures were being taken to strengthen surveillance of the nation’s borders to prevent the inflow of arms and ammunition into the country.

Also speaking, the Minister of Police Affairs, Alhaji Maigari Dingyadi, said the meeting was proactive enough to deal with the advances of terrorists for good.
