Kano Residents Lament Over Lack Of Potable Water

Residents of Zoo road, titin gidan Sani Kabara have decried over lack of drinking water as their taps discharge dirty and unhygienic liquid.

Radio Nigeria’s correspondent Khadijah Aliyu who went round the neighborhood observed that, most of the residents had to seek alternative means of getting water.

Most of the residents lamented that, they had to trek long distance to seek for services of water vendors popularly known as ‘yan garuwa, who sell each water truck or ‘kuran ruwa’ at the rate of seven hundred or one thousand naira.

Reports indicate that, the he issue started early March 2022 and nothing is yet to be done.

The tap water which on closer inspection appears dark and smelly is used by most people for their daily needs due to the weather condition and lack of money to patronize water vendors.

A resident Saratu Muhammad, who spoke to Radio Nigeria appealed to the state government to come to their aid.

She said when Kano state water board officials came to dispatch bill she raised the issue and was told that the water pipes were faulty.

According to her, the smell emanating from the tap is unbearable which can lead to cholera and other deadly infections.

“Sometimes we send our children to fetch water from a nearby tap which is sometimes better than the one at home”

When contacted the Director water distribution, kano state water board Engineer Magaji Hussain said they were yet to receive complaints on such issue.

He said the agency would investigate and take necessary action.

The Director advised the general public to report similar cases to the Kano state water board office nearest to them.

Earlier, Kano state governor Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje ordered the rural water supply agency to immediately swing into action by distributing water tankers to some specific locations within the metropolitan local government areas.
