ICT Provides Alternative Platform For Learning – VC FUD

Federal University Dutse says Information and Communication Technology ICT, becomes an important tool in providing alternative platform for learning, as the COVID-19 remains around.

The Vice Chancellor Professor Abdulkareem Sabo Mohammed stated this while briefing newsmen at the University’s Senate Chamber in Dutse.

Professor Sabo described ICT as one of his main agenda of improving the quality of ICT services in the university to enhance e-learning by providing improved Internet services.

He said ICT was now the driving force for modern university education and with the COVID-19 still, around, it had become an important tool in providing alternative platforms for learning using e-learning systems.

According to him, within the period under review, a 45Mbps wireless broadband internet service has been installed in campus for staff and students.

Professor Abdulkareem Sabo Mohammed said this was the first of its kind since the establishment of the institution. 

He noted that they were also installing access points across the university to make internet connectivity strong.

“A student’s wireless access project phase I, covering male hostel, students centre and one that of the female’s hostel has been completed”.

The VC said a similar project at the JD Amin Library had also been completed, while the second phase of the installation of the access point is ongoing.

He pointed out that, the university’s ICT directorate had successfully developed and deployed an efficient, responsive and user friendly result processing module for the institution, named “MY RESULT”.

“With this module, students can now access their results online using their mobile phones as well as transcript and senate format result, that’s grade distribution, summary of graduating students, press releases students exam card can now be generated easily using the new system”

Professor Abdulkareem Sabo explained that the directorate also developed a new university staff portal that had already incorporated functions,such as staff profile and payslip generation.

He added that, some functions like staff appraisal, annual and casual leave, University Health Centre, electronic medical record and lots more were under consideration.

He said that, the system allows staff to update their profiles, online, which was to be used on the university’s website.

“And with smartphone, IPPIS pay slip can be generated monthly. The UHC electronic system when in full use, patients will be registered online, medical doctors can get lab results online sent from the labs.

“And after consultations, prescriptions are sent online to the pharmacy for the drug to be dispensed.~ Sabo noted

He said the new system saved the university huge cost attached to manual paperwork.
