Fuel Subsidy: NLC Suspends Planned Nationwide Strike

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has suspended its planned nationwide protest scheduled for January 27, 2022, over the proposed subsidy removal by the Federal Government.

Addressing newsmen at the end of its National Executive Council Emergency Virtual meeting in Abuja, NLC President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba said the suspension of the protest was necessitated by the decision of the Federal Government to reverse its plan on subsidy removal.

Comrade Wabba said the position of the government on subsidy was officially communicated to Congress with an invitation by the government for further engagement.

He insisted that the attendant effect of the proposed removal of petrol subsidy would have heightened the current inflation, deepen the poverty level and led to an economic crisis in the country.

The Labour leader reiterated the readiness of the NLC to continue engagement with the government on critical issues of ensuring local refining of petroleum, creation of sustainable jobs, and affordable price of PMS for Nigerian workers and the people.

He commended Nigerian workers and the civil society allies for their unwavering solidarity and support during the struggle.
