The Nigeria Football Federation has fired Gernot Rohr as Super Eagles coach on Sunday and nominated former national team captain Austin Eguavoen as interim manager.

Eguavoen, a former Nigeria captain, coached the team that placed third at the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt in 2006.

He will now take leadership of the team as it begins preparations for the 33rd Africa Cup of Nations, which will be held in Cameroon from January 9th to February 6th, 2022, and until a new Head Coach is appointed.

He was the Super Eagles’ on-field captain when they won the Africa Cup for the first time on foreign soil, in Tunisia, 27 years ago.

Rohr has been in charge of the 3-time African champions for the past 64 months, making him Nigeria’s longest-serving manager.

NFF’s General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi, stated that the relationship between the NFF and Mr Rohr had come to an end.

A statement said Eguavoen will work with Salisu Yusuf (Chief Coach), Paul Aigbogun (Assistant Coach), Joseph Yobo (Assistant Coach), Dr Terry Eguaoje (Assistant Coach), and Aloysius Agu (Goalkeeper Trainer).

Former Nigerian captains Augustine ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu, and Garba Lawal have been recruited to provide technical and diplomatic support to the crew.”
