Telecom Industry, A Catalyst For Digital Economy Agenda – Prof Danbatta

The telecommunications sector has been described as a major driver of the digital economy agenda of the Federal Government.

The Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Professor Umar Garba Danbatta stated this during the 2021 Kano International Trade Fair, held in Kano.

Professor Danbatta said the Nigeria Communication Commission was working tirelessly in providing the needed digital issues that support the economy, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic and its attendant restriction period.

He said Since the outbreak of the pandemic, government institutions, businesses and individuals have relied heavily on telecoms services to carry out their daily operations and official routines.

Professor Garba Umar Danbatta noted that In response to the increased demand for telecoms services, the Commission put a number of regulatory measures in place to ensure seamless access by Nigerians to telecommunications services and protect them against any adverse impact on the quality of service enjoyed by consumers.

“The steady growth of telecoms sector over the years with its pervasive positive impact on all other sectors of the economy in terms of increased automation of processes and digital transformation in service delivery has been remarkable. Towards sustaining this, the NCC continues to create a conducive environment that stimulates the deployment of robust telecoms/broadband infrastructure for improving the quality of service (QoS) and quality of experience (QoE) for telecoms consumers, be it individuals or corporates. “

He said While the COVID-19 had come with its challenges, the Commission was working assiduously with various stakeholders including the consumers, to see how more businesses can embrace digital platforms for delivering their services to the consumer.

The Executive Vice Chairman Maintained that the growing demand for connectivity was pressuring companies to upgrade their telecommunications infrastructure, saying Network transformation was very imperative for innovative businesses and also allowing them to address changing customer expectations.

In a remark, the Director of Consumer Affairs Bureau Mr. Efosa Idehen said NCC has been at the forefront of Supporting telecom Consumers, which includes Micro Small, and Medium enterprises.

He said the Move was Aimed at turning the Challenge of the Covid 19 pandemic into Opportunities that result in their growth and development.

Mr. Efosa Idehen reiterated NCC’s Commitment to Ensuring Fair Competition and level – Playing Field for all Stakeholders in the Communication Industry.
