Direct Primaries : Reps Invites INEC Chairman Over Cost Implication

House of Representatives has invited the Chairman Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Professor Yakubu Mahmood to address it on the high cost of running direct primaries.

The resolution followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Mr Leke Abejide from Kogi State during the house plenary.

In his lead debate Mr Leke Abejide argued that it was necessary for the INEC Chairman to address the House so that all the insinuations and concerns about the issue can be resolved.

He said as the National Assembly is currently working on the (2022) appropriation, it is still an added advantage to consider the likely cost for conduct of direct primaries in the country.

Mover of the motion maintained that in view of the importance of direct primary in transferring it is necessary for the INEC Chairman to tell house what it will cost them to conduct the direct primaries.

After a debate, the house referred the matter tog its committees on INEC and Appropriation for further considerations.
