Kano State Commissioner for Higher Education, Dr. Mariya Mahmud Bunkure says the ministry will focus more on infrastructural development and training and retraining of lecturers to upgrade educational standard in the state.
Dr. Mariya made this known while defending the 2022 proposed budget of the ministry before the Kano State House of Assembly.
According to the commissioner, the state government had sponsored lecturers in the state tertiary institutions for masters and PHD programs in France and Cyprus.
She explained that, the government had also approved the introduction of new courses and accreditation of some courses across the state owned institutions.
Similarly, the vice chancellor of Yusuf Maitama Sule University Kano, Professor Atiku Kurawa, said the institution’s 2022 budget would pave way for the establishment of students hostels and other infrastructures for a condusive learning enviroment.
He pointed out that, the faculty of science and humanities would soon be completed to accommodate the large number of students, studying at the university.
The vice chancellor commended the committee for the cordial working relationship.
“Where we need to improve on the budget have been amended. Another issue raised by the committee is the upgrade of the university” he said.
Earlier, Chairman House Standing Committee on Higher Education, Alhaji Ali Ibrahim Isah Shanono said the committee had reviewed the performance of the ministry.
He noted that, 12 higher Institutions including the Ministry had been scrutinized and necessary corrections have been made especially the issue of courses accreditation and provision for payment of salaries and allowances.
Alhaji Ali Isah Shanono said a department in the School of Science and Technology that was omitted had been added to the proposed budget as well as adequate provision for laboratory equipments.
“We made some corrections to the proposed budget to ensure provision of BRT buses for staff and students. We will recommend the payment of 10% to government by the institutions instead of 25% of the total revenue generated by the institutions” the Chairman explained.
State owned higher institutions who defended their budget include, Kano State University of Science and Technology Wudil, Yusuf Maitama Sule University Kano, Kano State Polytechnic, Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education among others.
