NiMET Urges Nigerians To Prepare For Harmattan

The Director-General of Nigeria Meteorological Agency NiMET, Mansur Matazu has advised Nigerians to drive with caution, especially in the extreme northern parts of the country where reduction in visibility is envisaged.

This is because of the expected rise in dust at Faya Largeau in Chad Republic, a major dust source region for Nigeria and West Africa signaling the harmattan season.

NiMET in an advisory alert said more dust is expected during the early morning period.

Matazu said significant visibility deterioration is expected in some northern cities such as Maiduguri, Kano, Katsina and Sokoto while most parts of the central states are expected to be partly cloudy with sunny intervals.

NiMET Boss explained that the southern states would be cloudy with prospects of isolated thunderstorms.

He urged citizens to keep the body hydrated by drinking water to avoid heat stroke.

The NiMET boss added that there would be reduction in visibility which may disrupt flight operations.
