World Sight Day 2021: Over 1000 Children Enjoy Free Eye Surgery In Kaduna

Kaduna State Government in collaboration with Sightsavers has conducted eye surgery on over one thousand children born with eye complications and given corrective lenses to over two thousand children from 2017 to date.

Radio Nigeria reports that the World Sight Day is celebrated every second Thursday of October every year to create awareness about eye health and eye-related issues and this year’s theme is ” Love your eyes”.

The acting program manager, Kaduna State Ministry of Health, Mallam Sani Yahaya Ikara stated this at the celebration of international world sight day in Kaduna.

Mallam Sani Yahaya explained that since the inception of the program in 2017, children from age 1 to 16 with refractive error and cataracts were selected; surgery and glasses were provided across schools and Primary Health Centres in the state.

Also speaking, Doctor Jeremiah Daikwo who represented the Director of Public Health from the state Ministry of Health advised residents to eat healthy food like spinach, eggs, carrot, oranges, tomatoes and beans to protect their eyes.

Dr.Jeremiah Daikwo encouraged the populace to use protective eye glasses and minimize time spent in watching television, adding that people should undergo regular eye check-up to protect thier eyes.

In her remark, the Sightsavers Program Manager Mrs Anita Gwom described World sight Day as important, reiterating the eye as the light of the body hence the need for periodic checks to ensure proper protection.
