Zamfara: NHRC Advocates Establishment Of Sexual Assault Referral Centres

The National Human Rights Commission Zamfara State has called on the state government to establish three Sexual Assault Referral Centres in the state to address the issue of sexual abuses.

The State Coordinator of the Commission Abdullahi Abubakar made the call in an interview with Radio Nigeria in Gusau, the state capital.

He said the high rate of sexual abuses especially rape cases, homosexuals, lesbianism, sodomy, child abuse among others had become alarming and called for urgent attention to address the issue.

Alhaji Abubakar said the Commission had received about fifty domestic cases including family issues like marriages, neighborhood crises, land disputes from January to date adding that, fifteen cases have been resolved while others were still ongoing.

The State Coordinator called on the state assembly to pass bills into law especially that of Child right acts as well as administration of criminally justice which needed to be demosticated.

The Human Right Activist also advised the public to open up to ensure the issue becomes a thing of the past.

He further urged media, parents and other stakeholders to contribute their quota towards educating the general public on the dangers attached to this ugly trend as well as expose those engaged it.

Alhaji Abdullahi advised state government to involve federal government, Civil Society Organizations, Non governmental organization, Ulamas in addressing the issue as he said the situation was increasing due to serious humanitarian crisis affecting the state and beyond.

He added that government should look into the issue of sexual abuses especially in Almajiri Schools to rid the menace.
