Use Your Influence To Stabilise West Africa, UN Scribe Tells Buhari

Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, has urged President Buhari to use his influence to help stabilise the West African sub-region.

The Secretary-General appealed during a meeting with President Buhari at the sidelines of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly taking place in New York, USA.

The UN Scribe, expressed concern that Africa, especially West Africa, the once peaceful region, where good governance was practised, had recently been witnessing socio-political crises.

He, therefore, urged President Buhari to continue to show leadership, saying that he looks up to Nigeria to help stabilise the sub-region in terms of democracy and good governance.

On terrorism, the Secretary-General commended the efforts of Nigeria, assuring President Buhari of the United Nations’ continued support in her efforts to address the prevailing security and humanitarian challenges that had arisen, thereby compelling displacing people.

He also commended Nigeria’s efforts on climate change, and expressed willingness of the world body to co-operate with Nigeria in that regard.

Speaking, President Muhammadu Buhari applauded Mr Gutterres for his global leadership and the success of the 76th Session.

According to him, Nigeria is s ready to support and work closely with the United Nations towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
