No fewer than one thousand houses have been destroyed across six local government areas by flooding in Kano since the commencement of the rainy season this year.

Executive Secretary of the Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) Dr. Saleh Jili made the disclosure during an exclusive interview with Radio Nigeria’s correspondent in Kano.

According to him, from the start of the season, 23 people lost their lives, 11 injured while 1,235 houses were destroyed across six local government areas recorded so far.

He pointed out that, flooding occured in Bunkure, Rano, Mknjibir, Tsanyawa, Doguwa and Tarauni local governments.

” 250 houses were destroyed in Bunkure, Rano 150, 272 in minjibir, 108 collapses in Tsanyawa, Tarauni , 67 and Doguwa which recorded 19 deaths”

The Executive Secretary attributed indiscriminate dumping of refuse in water ways as one of the major causes of environmental damage.

Dr. Saleh Jili maintained that the Kano state ministry of environment had submitted a proposed draft bill to the Kano state house of assembly which if passed into law, will protect the environment and sanction those found guilty of environmental pollution among others.

He charged the general public especially those living in flood prone areas to be more vigilant as all the 44 local governments across the state were affected by flooding last year.

“The Nigerian meteological agency predicted that 25 local government areas would be affected by flooding, these shows that more us yet to come and more gigantic efforts need to be made in reducing the impact of the disaster”

The SEMA Boss urged philanthropists and wealthy individuals to complement governments efforts by assisting people who lost their houses or properties due to flooding and other environmental hazards.
