KDSG Plans Domestication Of Disability Law

Kaduna state government is to establish a viable implementation Framework towards implementing the Law against discrimination of People with Disability

The Executive Director, Kaduna State Rehabilitation Board, Mallam Aliyu Haruna Yakasai stated this at a Stakeholder Disability workshop organized by African Polling institute in collaboration with Department of Special needs Kaduna Polytechnic.

He said the law was signed by President Mohammadu Buhari in 2018 after which each state was charged to domesticate it.

Mallam Aliyu Haruna Yakasai stated that the workshop was therefore organized by the African Polling institute for all Zones of the federation as a deliberate plan to find out how many states have been able to domesticate the law and implement it.

He further emphasized that Kaduna State government had mapped out a number of programs including provision of home and foreign scholarships for people with disabilities and urged them to diversity their areas of educational pursuit instead of mainly relying on teaching.

Also speaking, The resource person from Department of special Needs Kaduna Polytechnic Drs. Grace Jamila Billa, noted that the United Nations convention outlined the Rights of people with disabilities to include access to education, Health, Banking Facilities and other infrastructures which must be structured in an all inclusive manner.

Chairman, Joint National Association of people with disabilities Kebbi State Mallam Aliyu Altine Ribba lamented the enormous challenges faced by members of the Association and appealed to government to consider domesticating the law as a priority.

Mallam Aliyu Altine said people with disabilities ought to be given special considerations in some specific job opportunities because they cannot be employed as Police, Soldiers, Civil Defense or any other security outfit.
