Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development has organised a two-day Capacity training for Northern Stakeholders on Community Emergency Response.
Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajiya Sadiya Umar Faruk while declaring the training open in Kaduna said the participants were expected to understand the roles and responsibilities of first responders towards mitigation of disasters.
The minister, represented by the Deputy Director in charge of Disaster Management, Dr Abubakar Sulaiman explained that the Ministry had provided effective coordination of National and International humanitarian intervention to ensure strategic disaster mitigation, preparedness and response.
She said the Ministry in partnership
with a private company organized the two-day training to guide the participants from northern states to identify the consequence of disaster for the quick response and timely solution.
Hajiya Sadiya Umar Faruk further revealed that, the training had been carefully designed to guide the participants being the closest to
the communities to understand the effect of disasters on migration and how to mitigate such.
She expressed
hope that, at the end of the training, participants would understand how to assess the nature and scale of the disaster emergencies and also provide search and rescue assistance as well as basic care immediately after the disaster emergencies.
According to her, the training would go a
long way in building community resilience to disasters and subsequently improve humanitarian conditions.
Speaking, the Zonal Coordinator, North West, National Emergency Management Agency NEMA, Alhaji Bani Imamu Garki commended the Minister for the initiative to develop the capacity of Community Emergency Responders.
Alhaji Imamu Garki gave an assurance that the training would benefit the participants in various ways while urging them to put into practice what they have learnt.
He further reminded people that, disaster management was not only a government responsibility, stressing that, everyone has a duty on disaster management.
The representative of private company, Noora Imam Shehu said the participants are from various offices of States Emergency Management Agency-SEMA, NEMA and Refugees Commission.
