Borno state Government has promised to strengthen the primary healthcare system to improve the lives of millions of internally displaced persons and returnees.

Executive Director State Primary Healthcare Development Agency Dr Aliyu Shettima made the promise at a media briefing as part of activities to mark 2021 National Safe Motherhood Day.

Dr Shettima said more hospital equipment and ambulances had been procured and deployed to camps and newly resettled communities to ensure pregnant women access the services in order to reduce maternal death and complications.

According to him, some of the leading causes of death include sepsis, haemorrhage, severe hypertension, obstetric emergency among others.

“Borno state government has taken a holistic approach before resettling any IDP to any community in areas of health and nutrition with the support of partners. During the resettlement  process, the health workers will also move with them to establish effective health services for the vulnerable people”.

The Executive Director observed that many pregnant women attend anti-natal services in primary healthcare centers but hardly come for delivery which has become a major constraint of having an effective data of maternal mortality and morbidity in the state.

He explained that in an effort to bridge this gap, the Agency engaged and commenced training of Community Health Influencers and Promoters CHIPs at the local government level to integrate their services.
