University Don Charges Journalists To Promote Peace

Professor of Mass Communication, University of Maiduguri Professor Danjuma Gambo

The Dean faculty of Social Sciences University of Maiduguri, Professor Danjuma Gambo has charged journalists to disseminate information that will promote peaceful coexistence and corporate wellbeing of Nigeria.

Professor Danjuma Gambo gave the charge at an event to mark World Press Freedom Day organised by Mass Communication Students Association MACOSA University of Maiduguri chapter.

The Dean who was also a professor of development communication said this year’s event comes at a time when the corporate existence of the country is being threatened by mischief makers, through the use of fake news and hate speeches to cause disaffection among Nigerians.

He observed that the traditional media have to promptly adjust to the challenges of technology and changing culture of work ethics to counter the destructive narrative being spread by the mischief makers.

The University Don also stressed the need for improve quality control in the media industry through constant review of editorial policy, programme planning structure and discontinue the growing cases of casualisation of journalists.

Speaking on the theme of the celebration, Information as Public Good, Professor Muazu of the Mass Communication Department, University of Maiduguri advocated the regulation of social media to control harmful and destructive contents on platforms.

He warned journalists against using information that would further polarise Nigerians instead, mobilise them towards nation building and sustain the current democratic system.

There were musical performances and cultural display by students of the department.
