FG Advocates Affordable Rent, Housing For Nigerians

The Federal Government has advocated for the intervention of States in the provision of affordable housing for its citizens.

Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola stated at the ninth meeting of the National Council on Lands, Housing and Urban Development held in Jos, Plateau state.

According to the Minister,the intervention is in the area of negotiating easy mode of payment for tenants particularly giving the challenges caused by Covid 19.

Fashola said Government at the Federal level is considering the deployment of rapid cooperative housing through the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria.

The Minister asked the Council to consider the intervention by recommending a legislation that limits how such advance rent can be paid for paid accommodation.

In a remark, Plateau State Governor Mr Simon Bako Lalong noted that one major global challenge faced by developers for investment is access hence the rise in the cost of rent.

The ninth meeting with the theme: Housing Delivery in the Covid19 Era and Beyond the strategies for affordability and accessibility had in attendance delegates from the thirty six states of the country and Federal Capital Teritory.
