Chadwick Boseman Wins 2 Posthumous Awards

Chadwick Boseman has been honored with two posthumous NAACP Image Awards. Boseman won outstanding actor in a motion picture Saturday night for his work in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” and was awarded outstanding supporting actor Friday for “Da 5 Bloods.”

His wife, Simone Ledward, accepted the two awards on his behalf.

“As always, he would give all honor and glory to the most high God,” she said. “He would thank his mom and dad. And he would give honor to his ancestors as we now honor him. Thank you NAACP for giving him his flowers. He was an uncommon artist and an even more uncommon person.”

Boseman, who died at age 43 in August 2020 after a private four-year battle with colon cancer, won a posthumous best actor Golden Globe in February for his “Ma Rainey’s” performance, which also earned him an Oscar nomination.

During her acceptance speech, Ledward encouraged people to get screened for colon cancer, noting that earlier detection increases chances of survival.

Other winners from Saturday night’s Anthony Anderson-hosted live show included Viola Davis for outstanding actress, D-Nice for Entertainer of the Year and “Bad Boys for Life” for outstanding motion picture. LeBron James took home the President’s Award for his work off the court, including his I Promise school.

Many winners were also announced earlier in the week, as Beyoncé racked up four wins in music categories. Boseman also won the NAACP’s best actor award in 2019 for “Black Panther.”
