Chairman, Joint Tax Board Mr Mohammed Nami says Nigeria must take lead in using technology for tax administration globally.

He stated this at the 147th meeting of the Joint Tax Board with the theme “Strategic Initiatives for Sustainable Revenue Generation: Prospects, Challenges and Next Steps held in Kaduna.

Mr Mohammed Nami said for the Joint Tax Board to deliver on its mandate of improved revenue generation, it must be innovative in the use of technology and tax intelligence to counter the alarming trend of tax evasion.

He explained that the Joint Tax Board would deliberate on the “NIN for Tax Initiative” to enable them establish areas of synergy within the tax administration system, relevant agencies and organisations for revenue mobilisation in the country.

According to JTB Chairman, the NIN database is expected to be the most robust, accurate and comprehensive database of current, potential and future taxpayers who are of interest to them as tax administrators.

He stressed that, by linking NIN to all key economic activities of individuals and businesses, the initiative would provide reliable, easy to access information to determine the accuracy of the information declared for tax purposes by all taxpayers.

In an address, Governor Nasiru Elrufai told the tax experts that the State’s IGR has tripled to N50.9bn and that the state was committed to improving tax collection to better reflect its GDP.
