Reps To Probe Fund Spent On Rehabilitation Of Refineries

Cov/ Muhammad Tsibiri, Abuja

House of Representatives has planned to conduct a comprehensive audit of funds spent on rehabilitation and maintenance of refineries in the country.

This followed a motion moved by a member from Akwa Ibom Mr Onofiok Akpan and unanimously adopted by the house during it’s plenary.

The decision was part of efforts to ensure that Nigerian refineries were effectively put to use as well as the prudent management of public funds in line with the Legislative Agenda of the 9th National Assembly.

Presenting the motion, Mr. Onofiok Luke, said Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation NNPC’s 2014-2018 Audit Report indicated that the Nation’s four Refineries had recorded over N1.6 Trillion cummulative losses within the period.

He expressed concern that NNPC had allegedly spent about Twenty- Five Billion Dollars for turn around maintenance of refineries in the last Twenty-Five years.

Adopting the motion, the House urged the executive arm of government to grant licences and provide incentives for building and construction of Modular Refineries in the country.

Most of the lawmakers that contributed on the motion described it as timely in view of the huge amount of money government is expending on the nation’s refineries with insignificant result.
