Zamfara Govt Inaugurates Public Procurement Council

Governor Bello Muhammad Matawalle of Zamfara state has inaugurated a council on public procurement as part of efforts to entrench the culture of transparency in the process of
award and execution of contracts.

Alhaji Bello Matawalle said at the inauguration of the Council on Monday in Gusau that it would ensure a more transparent system of contract bidding, award and implementation, in line with Global Transparency Initiative.

According to him, the Bureau for Public Procurement is basically aim at addressing public concern on the poor level of transparency and robust institutional mechanism to ensure effective and prudent utilisation of public funds.

He stressed that the Council consists people of high caliber including the Governor or, in his absence,
the Deputy Governor as the Chairman while the Secretary of the Bureau to serve as secretary of the Council.

“The major functions of the Council include receive and consider for approval the audited account of the Bureau, Periodically review socioeconomic effects of procurement policies and to
Provide advisory services to the Governor on the status of the State procurement in relation to annual appropriation”
Matawalle explained.

He noted that the transparency initiative would instil confidence in all those who want to invest in Zamfara State, as public corruption was one of the key issues hindering capital flow in this part of the world.

The Governor said his administration would continue to put in place the necessary structures and frameworks to protect public interest and other government businesses.
