Reps Directs NCC To Extend NIN Submission To 10 weeks

House of Representatives has directed National Communications Commission NCC to extend deadline for the submission of National Identity numbers to service providers from two to ten weeks.

This was sequel to a motion by a member from Delta State, Mr Ndudi Elumelu, at plenary.

The Lawmaker observed that though the policy is laudable, the timing was wrong as Nigerians have not been properly sensitized.

Mr Elumelu, expressed concern that if the NCC is allowed to carry out the two weeks directive, it will bring about untold hardship as millions of subscribers will be disconnected in the yulitide period which could spell disaster.

He maintained that it will also create unnecessary panic which may lead to the exploitation of vulnerable Nigerians.

Contributing to the debate, a member from Oyo state, Mr Akeem Adeniyi, commended the policy by the NCC saying it will curb unnecessary competition by the service providers which is doing more harm than good.

After adopting the motion, Speaker of the House, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila mandated the Committee on Communication to ensure compliance.
