House Committee Brainstorms On Effective Police Reform

House of Representatives is to partner International Parliaments to share ideas and experience on how to make Nigerian Police forces effective in discharging thier constitutional duties.

The Speaker Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, made the remark at the 9th Assembly Legislative Agenda on Public)Police Dialogue in Abuja.

Organised by the House Committee on Police Affairs, the session was designed to allow stakeholders brainstorm and provide workable solutions on Challenges affecting the operations of Police force in Nigeria.

Mr Gbajabiamila, observed that the police can never be effective when mechanism for accountability and discipline were too weak to identify and prosecute rogue officers.

The Speaker, further appealed to stakeholders to use the session to provide recommendations that would help the house implement it’s Legislative agenda of repositioning the nation’s security status for effective protection of lives and property.

In a remark, Chairman House Committee on Implementation and Monitoring of the Legislative Agenda Mr Henry Nwawuba, said the
9th Assembly was committed to seeking collective and holistic ways to finding lasting solutions to national needs.

Also Speaking the Chairman House Committee on police affairs, Alh Bello Kumo, assured that at the end of the session a Bill would be intiated and laid before the House after which the committee will provide an enabling environment for people to cross fertilize ideas.

Similarly, the Resident Director, United Nations Development Programme UNDP, Mr Muhammad Yahaya, emphasized restoration of trust between citizens and the police as the key for growth and development of democracy.
