KDSG Inaugurates Commission Of Inquiry To Tackle Police Brutality

Kaduna State Government has called on protesters and victims of any human right violation to avail the State Commission of Inquiry on police brutality relavant information to deliver justice to victims.

The Deputy Governor, Dr Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe stated this while inaugurating Members of the Judicial Commission of inquiry into the acts of brutality by police in the State at Government house, Kaduna.

She said the governors of the 36 states of the Federation and the FCT Minister agreed at the last meeting of the National Economic Council to establish judicial Commission of inquiry into acts of police brutality in every State.

Dr Hadiza Balarabe explained that the Commission was a critical step in establishing accountability for unlawful conduct by police personnel and creating a platform for victims and their families to receive redress for their pain and lost

According to her, the emergence of sustained institutional mechanisms for independent review of Police action would help against the abuse of powers.

Dr Balarabe emphasised that this was one of the first steps that can be immediately taken among several other measures required for securing comprehensive reform.

Famous among this according to her is the constitutional arrangement for policing especially its funding, it governance, training and professionalism as well as the Welfare of the personnel.

Dr Hadiza Balarabe further stated that, Six months had been granted to the commission to complete it assignment and submit it report.

She pointed out that, as agreed by the National Economic Council, the commission would receive and investigate complains of police brutality or related extra judicial killings.

“It will also recommend compensation and other remedial measures where appropriate and wished the Commission success in discharging its duty” she added.

Responding, Chairman of the Commission, Justice David Shiri Wyom retired commended the State Government for finding them worthy for the job.

Justice David Wyom assured the State Government that they would do their best within the time prescribed to carry out the assignment.

The Chief Judge of Kaduna State, Justice Mohammed Lawal Bello, the State Commissioner of Police, Umar Muri, representatives of other security agencies and Members of the State Executive Council among others were present during the inauguration.
