Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba has presented to the National Assembly a proposed date for reopening of schools across the country.

The Minister made the presentation in Abuja during a meeting with the Senate Committee on Basic and Secondary Education.

He said as a post Covid-19 measure adopted by Government,  the reopening process  would commence with pupils in exit classes.

Mr Nwajiuba noted that the proposal has not been made public, to avoid speculations.

The Minister submitted that the document was presented before the senate for criticisms and inputs.

He however wondered why the Government of Oyo was eager to throw open the gates of its schools, despite increasing cases of Covid-19 in the state.

Vice Chairperson, Senate Committee on Basic and Secondary Education, Sen. Akon Eyakenyi, who presided over the meeting, expressed fears that the academic calendar could be distorted in public schools where no visible arrangement was made to teach the children at home.

She regretted that children in public schools had no access to online classes like their counterparts in private schools.

The Lawmaker stressed that if government can give guidelines for the reopening of churches and mosques, stakeholders in the education sector should also hold a meeting with the authorities to agree on modalities to reopen schools.
