NAFDAC Warns Of Impending Drug Shortage

National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control -NAFDAC says shortage of drugs is likely to occur in the country should the Coronavirus otherwise known as COVID-19 epidemic continue in China.

Director General of NAFDAC, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye gave the warning during a news briefing in Abuja on the African Medicine Quality Forum-AMQF meeting scheduled for February 24 to 28.

Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, said India which Nigeria depends on for a greater percentage of its drug imports, has already been hit by the ravaging effects of the virus.

She said India buys most of their materials and active ingredients from China while Nigeria imports 70 percent of its medicines as well as active and non active ingredients mostly from the South Asian country.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has assured Nigerians, especially those in Wuhan, that it was monitoring their health situation through its embassy in China.

Minister of State for Health, Dr. Olorunnibe Mamora who confirmed this also said government would not hesitate to evacuate Nigerians in China, especially in Wuhan Province if need arose.
