The House of Representatives has resolved to set up an ad hoc committee to investigate poor budget implementation and delays in the payment of completed and certified contracts by the Federal Government.
The decision followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by a lawmaker representing Abia State, Mr Alex Mascot, during plenary.
Mascot said the investigation was necessary due to the hardship faced by Nigerian contractors who had completed government projects but were yet to receive payment, despite using their resources to execute the jobs.
He expressed concern over what he described as poor implementation of the 2024, 2025 and 2026 budgets, despite approvals for supplementary budgets and borrowing requests running into trillions of naira to fund projects and settle contractors.
The House later witnessed a heated session lasting about 40 minutes after the lawmaker called for the President to appear before lawmakers to explain the challenges affecting budget implementation.
However, the Speaker of the House, Dr Abbas Tajudeen, intervened and assured members that an ad hoc committee would be constituted to investigate the matter and submit its report for further legislative action.
