At least 120,000 students in Kwara state are to benefit from the Nigeria learning Passport (NLP) initiative to increase their capacity in digital learning skill in basic education.
Speaking at the launch of the programme in Ilorin, organised by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in collaboration with Kwara state government, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazq said the programme would also improve the capacity of the teacher.
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Jibril Mamma Saba, the governor said the idea of the initiative is to bring the class room closer to the students.
He explained that with the introduction of digital learning, the students can learn from any part of the world.
AbdulRazq commended the federal government and UNICEF for the introduction of the programme to support teachings and learning.
He also appealed to United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to give more intervention to the state.
In his address, the Chief of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Office, Mr Gerida Birukila represented by the Education officer, Mr Bala Dada said the programme would also train about 3,000 teachers in the state on digital skills.
Mr Birukila explained that the programme is targeted at poor rural dwellers, marginalized girls and out of school children.
He said about 15,000 devices have been made available to poor and rural children to improve their digital skills.
Mr Birukila assured that the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) would continue to partner the state government in education, and health among other areas.
He maintained that the digital skills of over one million learner’s have been improve from year 2022.
In her remarks, the Kwara state Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Hajiya Sa’adatu Madibbo Kawu said the state government would mobilised resources to ensure success of the programme.
She appealed to UNICEF and other international donor agencies to ensure continuous support and upgrade of facilities for the programme to enable them last longer.
