Vice President Kashim Shettima has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to tackling the ongoing flood disaster in Maiduguri, Borno State, with a comprehensive plan designed to mitigate the impacts of such natural disasters.
During his visit to Maiduguri on Tuesday, VP Shettima expressed deep sympathy for the victims and assured that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration will prioritize the welfare of the affected communities.
Addressing the media after an on-the-spot assessment of the flood-hit areas, VP Shettima highlighted that the recent disaster was triggered by the overflow of the Alau Dam’s spillways, leading to the worst flooding Maiduguri has seen in over three decades.
The Vice President commended the swift response by the Borno State government and emphasized the federal government’s readiness to mobilize all necessary resources for relief efforts.
“The factors contributing to these recurring disasters are diverse,” Shettima noted, “and it is for this reason that President Tinubu has developed a comprehensive roadmap to address these challenges head-on.”
The Vice President also stressed the importance of the federal government’s Flood Outlook reports, which guide their flood mitigation strategies by incorporating historical data, climate forecasts, and hydrological models.
“In collaboration with Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, we are determined to ensure that our mitigation and recovery efforts reach every corner impacted by this disaster,” Shettima concluded, urging the nation to remain united and resilient in the face of adversity.
As relief efforts continue, the federal government’s focus remains on safeguarding communities, protecting agricultural zones, and reinforcing critical infrastructure to prevent future disasters.
