The Kaduna State Government’s committee, established to assess the flooding in Muchia, Sabon Gari LGA, and other parts of the state, has visited several communities impacted by the disaster in the state capital.

Addressing newsmen shortly after the visit, the Chairman of the committee, Malam Liman Sani Kila, described the incident as pathetic and terrible, warning that if not urgently addressed, it could expand to an unimaginable proportion.

While acknowledging the incident as a natural occurrence, Malam Liman Sani Kila recalled that a similar visit to Sabon Gari and Zaria LGAs indicated that some residents had flagrantly disregarded obtaining building permits and were dumping refuse in waterways.

He, therefore, advises residents of the state to obtain building permits from relevant authorities before erecting structures to avoid the loss of lives and property.

Malam Liman Sani Kila, who also doubles as the Chief of Staff to the Governor, sympathized with the affected victims and assured them of federal and state government intervention in terms of relief materials, as well as finding medium- and long-term solutions to the menace.

Some of the affected communities visited by the committee include Kigo road, Narayi and Bashama road all in Chikun, Kaduna -North and Kaduna South LGAs respectively.

The Chief of Staff was accompanied on the visit by the Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Environment, the Chairman of Chikun LGA, and officials from the State Emergency Management Agency, among others.

The committee’s mandate includes evaluating the damage caused by flooding in Muchia, Sabon Gari LGA, and other areas of the state; identifying the immediate and medium-term needs of the affected communities and suggesting suitable relief measures; pinpointing the factors that contribute to the area’s vulnerability to flooding and other disasters; and providing recommendations on both short- and long-term actions that the government should take to prevent similar disasters in the future.
