The Yobe State Government has announced a donation of N30 million to support the families of victims affected by a recent insurgent attack in Mafa, Tarmuwa Local Government Area.
Governor Mai Mala Buni, made this announcement during a visit to Babban-gida, the headquarters of Tarmuwa, where he attended the funeral of 34 individuals who lost their lives in the attack.
Represented by his deputy, Idi Barde Gubana, the governor instructed the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), to provide immediate assistance to those displaced by the attack, many of whom lost all their belongings.
Expressing deep sympathy to the residents and the Emir of Jajere, Alhaji Mai Buba Mashio, Governor Buni condemned the brutal assault and emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing security concerns.
He disclosed that he had met with the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, to discuss sustainable security measures for Mafa, which is located near the border between Borno and Yobe states.
Deputy Governor Gubana stressed the importance of deploying additional troops to Mafa, a vital trade hub, to prevent future attacks. He underscored the state’s devastation over the killings and its resolve to enhance security in the region.
Brig. Gen. Dahiru Abdulsalam, Special Adviser on Security Matters, clarified earlier reports, stating that the death toll was less than 34. He confirmed that five people sustained injuries, four of whom were in critical condition while one was stable. Abdulsalam emphasized that the insurgents targeted civilians, not the military.
“The insurgents are not confronting the military; they are confronting innocent civilians who are soft targets,” he explained.
The attack, attributed to suspected Boko Haram insurgents, occurred on Sunday, resulting in the deaths of 34 residents and the destruction of shops and homes in Mafa village.
