The Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives has called for the immediate reversal of the recent petrol price increase, warning that it will worsen the economic suffering of Nigerians.
In a statement released on Thursday, Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda criticized the government’s unilateral decision to raise the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) without consulting relevant stakeholders, including the National Assembly.
The caucus said the move ignored principles of transparency, accountability, and fairness, which are crucial in decisions affecting the lives of citizens.
Chinda’s statement, titled “Reverse Petrol Prices Now,” urged President Bola Tinubu to urgently address the link between the harsh economic conditions and rising social unrest”.
“Any further hike in petrol prices will worsen the cost of transportation, food, and essential goods, eroding the already fragile purchasing power of citizens and pushing more families into poverty,” the statement read.
The Minority Caucus also expressed concern over the lack of consultation before the price hike, arguing that the decision was made without considering its full impact on ordinary Nigerians.
